Mission Statement of Women Playwrights’ Initiative

To foster the development and production of plays written by women through educational outreach, workshops, readings and productions.

History of Women Playwrights’ Initiative

We began with a small group of women meeting over coffee, each caring in her own way about women’s work in the theatre. The faces have changed over the years, but the mission has remained: to increase the production of plays written by women.

To that end, WPI has become a non-profit organization, gathered a Board of Directors, solicited manuscripts from women writers, staged several play readings and full productions, crafted a series of playwriting workshops, and launched the Wave of Women Writers (WOWW!) in the Central Florida area.

Now we want to include YOU in the conversation. Join our network and we’ll keep you updated on female playwrights to watch, productions you shouldn’t miss and how YOU can help increase the percentage of plays written by women that get produced around the world. According to a report issued by the New York State Council on the Arts, 83 percent of produced plays are written by men. Together we can change that number!
